Morduus, a deathcore band out of Northern Maine, just released a new album titled “Grotesque Reality."

Two years ago Morduus consisted of two original members, Julian Soucie on the bass and current vocalist, Lucas Wells, playing guitar and singing. Eventually, guitarists Xavier Towne and Nakoa Parsons joined, along with drummer Josh Correia.

“Mortiss means death in Latin,” stated Wells. “But, that was already taken as a band name so we switched the letters.”

Morduus is a culmination of many different musical influences. From prog metal band Avenged Sevenfold and deathcore group Infant Annihilator, to shred guitarists Van Halen and Dimebag Darell.

Recently, the band had their one year anniversary with every member present at the Next Generation Theatre in Brewer.

“I think we have grown exponentially in a year, compared to other bands,” stated Parsons.

The 22 year old guitarist was a solo artist for quite some time, battling the frustrations of trying to make a name for himself. Fortunately, Parsons found others inspired by music to support his dream.

Though, for Wells, Towne and Soucie, performing on stage is a new experience.

“The most important part is about how far we've come,” he said. “How much better we ourselves as musicians are and just being better on the stage with better sound quality.”

Though, some are deceived by the aggressive nature of metal, and keep a safe distance from the sludge-mosh genre.

“When you think of death metal, Satanic metal, all that shit, you’re going to think people are evil,” stated Towne. “I think metalheads are some of the nicest people.”

Local mosher, Galen Lamothe, showed up for the concert prepared to do his job in the pit. But, was also ready to make more friends of his nature.

“I think that's my favorite part of the experience, because I know that if I don't leave by the end of the show with a black eye, I have failed,” Lamothe stated.

The deathcore scene in Maine is tight.

Morduus played their show with other local bands Incandesca and Death’s Hand, who they easily connected with.

There will always be bands in the scene who are unwilling to cooperate with their counterparts, the band stated. Luckily, those bands are rare and most bands want to help each other succeed, especially in Maine’s tiny deathcore culture.

“I hope people like our stuff,” said Parsons. “And just to keep supporting local music because there's not too much of us.”

Morduus will play their next show on December 30th in Bangor under Buried Sun Productions. Local New England bands When The Dead Won’t Die, Smothered Sun, The Idiot Flesh, Flooding Panama, Serling and Lotus Eater Machine will be in attendance.
